Bridgerton — Filming Locations & Real Places

Going into Bridgerton, I assumed it was just a lavish period romance — and yes, the pastel gowns and ballroom scenes really are eye candy.

But there was one thing I kept wondering about all through Season 1: who is Lady Whistledown, the anonymous writer exposing every scandal in London society?

It turns out the show tells the audience early, and only the audience. Penelope Featherington, the quiet wallflower always watching from the sidelines, is subtly confirmed as Lady Whistledown almost from the start.

The characters themselves don't find out until Season 3, though. Colin's arc — from fury at discovering the truth, to eventually loving Penelope, secret identity and all — carries real weight for what's otherwise a long-simmering slow burn.

Looking up where those lavish London streets were actually filmed turned up an even bigger twist. Onscreen, the Bridgerton and Featherington houses face each other across the same square like neighbors — but in reality, they're in two completely different cities.

The Bridgerton house is Ranger's House in Greenwich; the Featherington house is Royal Crescent in Bath — a genuine Georgian terrace built in 1767. The production added stone lions and ornamentation to capture the family's ostentatious taste, then CGI'd the two together to look like neighbors sharing a London square.

I also learned that the voice behind faceless Lady Whistledown belongs to none other than Dame Julie Andrews — real gravitas smuggled into a character we never actually see.

Daphne and Simon's Season 1 storyline holds up on a rewatch, too. A marriage of convenience turning into real love is a familiar setup, but it lands differently once you realize their central conflict isn't a simple misunderstanding — it's a much heavier fight over whether to have children.

Season 2's Anthony and Kate follow a similar shape. Anthony, hunting for a bride purely out of duty, finds himself falling for the older sister of his intended match instead — and that conflict slowly turns into genuine love.

Bath stood in for all of London across Seasons 1 and 2, and the crew came back to Royal Crescent specifically to film Season 3.

Learning that the Duke of Hastings' residence is Castle Howard in Yorkshire, and Lady Danbury's house is the Holburne Museum in Bath, really drove home that this show's "London" is a composite of locations from across all of England.

The source material is Julia Quinn's bestselling novel series, produced by Shonda Rhimes's Shondaland.

So the show's glamorous London isn't really London at all — it's a composite of several cities stitched together. Ever since I learned this, I can't look at a photo of Bath without my eyes going straight to Royal Crescent.

If I ever make it to Bath, I want to stand in front of Royal Crescent, remember it was once the Featherington house, and go hunting for those stone lions.
