物語

『鬼滅の刃』は大正時代を舞台にした架空の日本が舞台なので、「本物のロケ地」というものは存在しない。それでも調べてみると、意外と巡れる場所は多かった。

まず出てきたのが太宰府の竈門神社。炭治郎の苗字「竈門」とまったく同じ名前を持つ実在の神社だ。もともと有名な場所だったが、作品のヒット後は世界中のファンが訪れる聖地になったという。

無限列車。あの真っ黒な蒸気機関車に実在のモデルがあるというのが、一番驚いた話だった。京都鉄道博物館に展示されているC62形蒸気機関車「シゴサン」が有力なモチーフとされている。

でもアニメ制作会社が実際に参考にしたと言われている蒸気機関車は、また別にあるらしい。埼玉・秩父鉄道のパレオエクスプレス。ファンの間では「本物の無限列車」と呼ばれているそうだ。

無限城の内部はどうだろうと調べてみたら、兵庫県城崎温泉の旅館がよく挙げられていた。豪華で迷路のような廊下の構造が、無惨の居室をはじめとする各部屋のデザインと重なるという声が多い。

もちろんこれらは全部「モチーフと推定される」場所だ。大正時代自体が架空にアレンジされた背景なので、ここが正解だと確定している場所はそう多くない。

でも物語そのものを改めて振り返ると、なぜここまで愛されたのか少しわかる気がする。炭を売って家族を養っていた炭治郎が、村へ行っている間に家族全員が鬼に殺されてしまう惨劇から物語は始まる。

たった一人生き残った妹・禰豆子までもが鬼に変えられてしまうのに、不思議と兄には襲いかからない。炭治郎は禰豆子を人間に戻す方法を探しながら、家族の仇を討つために鬼殺隊に入隊する。

善逸や伊之助といった個性豊かな仲間たちと出会いながら、炭治郎は那田蜘蛛山で初めて上級の鬼と対峙し、無限列車編では炎柱・煉獄杏寿郎の死を目の当たりにする。この一場面だけであの劇場版がヒットしたと言う人もいるくらいだ。

遊郭編では音柱・宇髄天元とともに上弦の鬼と死闘を繰り広げ、刀鍛冶の里編と柱稽古を経て、鬼殺隊全体の力がどんどん結集していく。

そして物語は、無惨と鬼殺隊全員が無限城で激突する最終章へと向かう。百年近くにわたる戦いの結末だ。

この結末がおもしろいのは、単に「鬼を倒した」で終わらないところだ。百年の時を超えてきた縁が、現代へとつながっていく形で締めくくられる。炭治郎たちがその長い戦いをどう終わらせるのか、そしてその縁が今の時代にどんな形で残っているのかは、ぜひ本編で確かめてほしい。

2016年から2020年まで週刊少年ジャンプに連載されたこの漫画、累計発行部数は1億5000万部を超えたという。劇場版「無限列車編」は2020年、日本の歴代興行収入1位(約404億円)を記録し、社会現象になった。

家族愛、喪失、贖罪といった普遍的な感情を、精巧なアクションと一緒に描いたことがこれほど広く愛された理由だとよく言われるけれど、全部見終えたあとだと、本当にその通りだと思う。

というわけでこの作品、名前が重なる神社から蒸気機関車、旅館まで辿っていくと、完全な架空の話とは思えなくなってくる。太宰府から始めて九州の温泉町までつなげる旅程、一度やってみたい。
