物語
この恒星系、本当にあるの? 『三体』を読んでいると、妙なところでゾクッとする。宇宙人が出てくる場面じゃなくて、「あれ、これ本当の話じゃん」と気づく瞬間に。
でもこの小説、実は最初から宇宙人の話じゃない。文化大革命の狂気の中で父イエ・ジョタイを失った天体物理学者イエ・ウェンジエが、人類への信頼を完全に失っていく話から始まる。
秘密軍事基地「紅岸基地」に配属されたイエ・ウェンジエは、太陽を増幅媒体に利用して恒星間通信が可能な送信装置を完成させる。8年後、三体文明の平和主義者から「返信するな」という警告を受け取るが、イエ・ウェンジエはその警告を無視して返信してしまう。この一つの選択が、三体文明による地球侵攻を引き起こす決定的な出来事になる。
イエ・ウェンジエが配属される秘密基地「紅岸」はもちろん完全な創作だ。でも調べてみると、この設定にヒントを与えたと思われる実在の施設がある。北京郊外の密雲観測所——1960年代から実際に宇宙へ向けて電波を送受信していた、冷戦期中国の本物の施設だ。
そしてイエ・ウェンジエが宇宙に信号を送るあの場面も、完全な創作ではない。1974年、人類は実際にアレシボ電波望遠鏡から宇宙へ向けて意図的にメッセージを送ったことがある。「アレシボ・メッセージ」と呼ばれる、小説の出来事とほぼ重なる本物の歴史だ。

現代パートの物語も別にある。ナノテク研究者のワン・ミャオが、物理学者たちの連鎖自殺事件と謎のVRゲーム「三体」に巻き込まれながら背後の真実に近づいていくんだけど、「牛騾作戦」で地球三体運動(ETO)の核心証拠を積んだ船がナノファイバーで切断される場面で、三体文明が事前に仕込んでいた超知能コンピューター「智子(ソフォン)」の存在が明らかになる。
2部では、智子が人間の思考だけは読めないという弱点を利用して、国連が真相を隠したまま4人の「面壁者」に全権を与える。テイラー、レイディアズ、ハインズという3人の計画が次々と崩れたり真相が暴かれたりするんだけど、この部分が個人的に一番ゾクッとした。
最後の面壁者ルオ・ジーは、イエ・ウェンジエから学んだ「宇宙社会学」の公理を使い、恒星の座標を宇宙全体に公開すると脅す力を手に入れる。宇宙がなぜこんなに静かなのかというこの小説なりの答え、「暗黒森林理論」だ。
185年間の冬眠から目覚めたルオ・ジーが見るのは、見違えるほど変わった未来の地球。ところが三体艦隊の偵察プローブ「水滴」が到着すると、人類が誇っていた2000隻の艦隊がわずか数分で全滅してしまう。
ルオ・ジーは実際に恒星をひとつ破壊してみせ、抑止力を証明するけれど、結局自分の墓の前で三体艦隊と最後の対峙をするところで2部が終わる。

3部では、宇宙飛行工学者のチェン・シンが、死にゆく恋人ユン・ティエンミンの脳だけを光速に近い宇宙船に乗せて三体艦隊へ送る「階段計画」を提案する。チェン・シンはルオ・ジーに続く2人目の「剣を持つ者」になるけれど、決定的な瞬間にためらってしまい、地球の防衛線が崩壊する。
その結果、宇宙船グラビティ号とブルースペース号が三体星系の座標を宇宙全体に放送して報復するんだけど、最終的に三体文明そのものが正体不明の第三の文明によって滅ぼされてしまう。続いて、高次元文明の兵器が太陽系全体を3次元から2次元へと崩壊させる、三部作最大の災厄が起こる。
チェン・シンとAAは唯一残った光速宇宙船で崩壊する太陽系を脱出する。恒星間航行の果てに、自らを閉じ込めることで攻撃の意図がないことを証明する防御技術「黒域」を発見するんだけど、黒域の中ではわずか数週間しか経っていないのに、外の宇宙では実に1800万年もの歳月が流れていたことに気づく。
そしてユン・ティエンミンが遺した最後の贈り物、独立した「小宇宙647号」を通じて、チェン・シンは彼と再会する。
でも一番驚いたのは別のところだった。トリソラリス文明が住むという「三体星系」、つまりケンタウルス座アルファ星は、想像上の名前じゃなくて地球から一番近い実在の恒星系だ。地球から4.37光年離れているけれど、南半球で晴れた夜空に出会えば肉眼でも見えるという。小説に出てくる物理学の概念——量子もつれや重力波なども、すべて実際の科学に基づいている。特に重力波は2015年に人類が実際に初めて検出し、2017年のノーベル物理学賞まで受賞している。
つまりこの小説、400年に及ぶ宇宙戦争の物語でありながら、同時に本物の科学と本物の歴史の上に築かれた物語でもあるわけだ。私は最近も、晴れた夜に南の空を見ると、ついケンタウルス座アルファ星がどのあたりにあるのか探してしまう。

The site of the novel's opening tragedy: during the Cultural Revolution, physics professor Ye Zhetai (Ye Wenjie's father) is beaten to death by Red Guards at a public struggle session here.
