The square where mass citizen rallies took place in May 1980, and where the official annual commemoration is still held every May 18. The real backdrop for the novel's scenes of citizens gathering in front of the provincial office to confront martial law troops.
The central street of downtown Gwangju and the site of martial law troops' mass shooting on May 21, 1980. This is also the street where the novel's Jeong-dae is shot dead. Forensic investigation later confirmed that soldiers fired on citizens from the rooftops of buildings lining the street, including the Jeonil Building and the old Suhyup building.
The official archive, housed in the former Gwangju Catholic Center building. Its holdings were inscribed on UNESCO's Memory of the World Register in 2011. Much of the testimony and material Han Kang drew on while writing the novel traces back to records held here.
Where martial law troops clubbed students protesting the campus closure on the morning of May 18, 1980. The wounded students scattered into Geumnam-ro, and this moment became the spark that turned the crackdown into a citywide uprising.
One of the main hospitals that treated wounded citizens in May 1980. As of 2026, it is being redeveloped into the "5·18 Daedong Peace Hall," preserving the original operating room and ICU.
Korea's oldest single-screen theater, opened in 1935 and still operating. Not a direct 1980 incident site, but every May it runs "May Cinema," screening 5·18-related films and documentaries — a living hub of ongoing memorial culture, including past reading events tied to Human Acts.
A national cemetery opened in 1997, to which 125 sets of remains were relocated from the original Mangwol-dong burial ground. Real victims, including Moon Jae-hak, are interred here. Note: this is a different location from the "old Mangwol-dong cemetery" below — a common point of public confusion.
The original burial ground where victims moved from Sangmugwan were first interred on May 29, 1980. Most remains were relocated when the new national cemetery was built in 1997, but this site retains its own historical significance as the real ground of the 1980s-90s truth-seeking movement.
After the mass shooting of May 21, citizens organized into a militia here, arming themselves from nearby reserve-forces armories and conducting shooting drills. It served as a base for self-defense until the militia consolidated at the provincial office on May 24.
Founded in 1905 by American Southern Presbyterian missionaries, this hospital treated wounded citizens and militia members during the uprising. Designated 5·18 Historic Site No. 10. Located within the Yangnim-dong missionary quarter.
Along with Chonnam National University, a campus occupied by martial law troops (7th Airborne Brigade) from the evening of May 17, 1980 — also a hub of the pre-uprising campus democratization movement.
