「関東別曲」は学校で覚えさせられただけの古典韻文だと思っていた。3・4調がどうとか、リズムの勉強のために。
でも後になって読み返してみると、これはただの詩じゃなくて、実際の踏査記録だった。
1580年、45歳の鄭澈(チョン・チョル)が江原道観察使として赴任し、実際に歩いた道をそのまま歌にしたものだ。
出だしからして面白い。鄭澈は王の召命に感激しながら原州の江原監営に赴任するところから詩を始める — つまりこの詩、最初から最後まで「自分が実際に経験した旅」という枠から一歩も出ない。
第2段に入ると内金剛が出てくる。万瀑洞、金剛台、眞歇台、開心台を登り降りしながら感嘆するのだが、この地名がすべて実在すると知って驚いた。

火龍淵や十二瀑布も同じだ。「滝がきれいだ」で終わらせず、具体的な場所の名前を一つひとつ挙げながら歌っていく。
第3段からは外金剛、海金剛を過ぎ、東海岸沿いに関東八景を巡るのだが、ここから少し複雑な気持ちになる。
関東八景のうち二カ所、叢石亭と三日浦は、今地図を開いても行くことができない。北朝鮮の領土だからだ。
鄭澈が、海から突き出た石柱に囲まれて日の出を眺め感嘆した叢石亭が、今は国境の向こうにあると知ると、あの一節がまったく違って読めてしまう。
三日浦も同じだ。新羅の花郎の伝説が残る場所らしいが、今は行くことができない。

その代わり、残りの六カ所 — 鏡浦台・洛山寺・竹西楼・清澗亭・望洋亭・越松亭 — は今もそのまま行くことができる。
その中でも一番有名な一節は鏡浦台の場面だ。空に浮かぶ月、湖に映る月、盃に沈む月 — 「三つの月」を歌う部分なのだが、今も鏡浦台に立てばこの一節そのままの光景を再現できるというのが不思議だった。
洛山寺・義湘台から見た日の出も、五十川の断崖の上に建つ竹西楼も、すべてそのまま残っている。440年前に鄭澈が見た風景を、今の自分も見られるということだ。
詩の最後、第4段は鄭澈が旅を終えた後、夢の中で仙人たちと遊ぶ場面で締めくくられる。実際の旅は終わったけれど、心はまだその風流に浸っている、という意味なのだと思う — そこに政治的な憂いもそっと込められているらしい。
そして金萬重が『西浦漫筆』でこの作品を「東方の離騒」とまで絶賛していたと知って、ただの教科書の古典詩じゃなくて本当にすごい作品だったんだと思い直した。
この一編の詩が440年前の実際の旅行コースだったと知ると、東海岸の旅がまったく違って見えてくる。今度江陵に行く機会があれば、鏡浦台であの「三つの月」を探してみたい。
