The site of the temple where the world's first metal-type printed book, Jikji, was actually published in 1377. A 1985 excavation confirmed the location after uncovering building foundations and a bronze gong inscribed with the temple's name, "Heungdeoksa." In the novel, this is where researcher Kim Jeong-jin explains Jikji's history to journalist Kim Ki-yeon — the story's real starting point. The boulevard running past the site is literally named "Jikji-daero," a sign of how central Jikji is to Cheongju's identity.

A museum opened in 1992 right next to the Heungdeoksa site, presenting Jikji and Goryeo-era metal-type printing through artifacts, replicas, and digital immersive exhibits. In the novel, this is where Cheongju-based Jikji researcher Kim Jeong-jin is depicted working, complete with AR interactive displays. The most direct place to see where the world's oldest metal-type printing technology actually originated.

A trendy alley district in Uncheon-dong near the Heungdeoksa site and the printing museum, where dozens of cafés, restaurants, and craft shops take part in a street festival during the Jikji Culture Festival. It doesn't appear directly in the novel, but it's a great way to experience everyday Cheongju life after exploring Jikji's history.

A cultural district designated by Cheongju around the Heungdeoksa site and printing museum, home to the annual Jikji Culture Festival held each autumn under the theme "Jikji, the Spark of Civilization." Programs include hands-on metal-type printing and a night exhibition at the temple's main hall site. Separate from the novel's plot, it's where visitors today can feel that Jikji is still a living civic festival, not just history.

A former tobacco factory remodeled into a cultural complex, home to the Cheongju branch of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art. If Jikji represents old printing technology, this is another example of Cheongju turning old industrial heritage into today's cultural content. It doesn't appear in the novel, but makes a great bonus stop for feeling both old and new Cheongju in one visit.

A well-known mountain fortress from the Joseon dynasty, popular for its walking trail along the walls and views over Cheongju. If Jikji represents Cheongju's intellectual and cultural pride, Sangdangsanseong shows another side of the city's long defensive history. Not related to the novel directly, but a staple recommendation for anyone spending more than a day in Cheongju.

Depicted as the university where Latin professor Jeon Hyeong-woo taught while researching the connection between Jikji and Gutenberg's metal type, along with an old letter from the Vatican. His death here is the real starting point of the present-day storyline, from which journalist Kim Ki-yeon's investigation unfolds.

Home to a permanent exhibition on Goryeo and Joseon metal-type printing, where visitors can see the real technology behind Jikji's story. It isn't a confirmed scene from the novel, but it's the most reliable place in Seoul to see the subject Kim Ki-yeon and Kim Jeong-jin are chasing — Goryeo-era metal-type printing — in person.

The fact that the original Jikji is held at the National Library of France is also tied to an ongoing conversation between Korea and France about cultural property repatriation. Not a confirmed scene from the novel, but this embassy is included as a real symbol of the kind of steps (visas, requests for cooperation) Ki-yeon would plausibly have gone through before heading to Paris.

(Bibliothèque nationale de France, Site Richelieu)

The real home of the surviving second volume of Jikji (catalogue number 109). Donated to the library in 1952 per the will of its owner Henri Vever, who died in 1943, it was here in 1972 that librarian Dr. Park Byeong-seon first identified Jikji and proved it predated Gutenberg's 42-line Bible by 78 years. One of the real destinations on Ki-yeon's European trail following Jeon Hyeong-woo's clues.

(Palais des Papes, Avignon)

The site of the 14th-century "Avignon Papacy," when the Roman papacy relocated here. In the novel, it's woven into Eunsu (Karena)'s European storyline and the trail of clues surrounding an old Vatican letter. One of the largest Gothic palaces in Europe, still conveying the scale of medieval papal power today.

(Strasbourg, France)

Where Gutenberg is believed to have secretly begun his movable-type printing experiments from around 1434 to 1444 — he reportedly called the venture "Art and Enterprise" with his business partners. He later returned to his hometown of Mainz to complete the 42-line Bible. In the novel, this is where researcher Professor Fischer provides clues linking Karena to European printing.

(Gutenberg-Museum, Mainz)

One of the oldest printing museums in the world, holding two of the surviving 49 original copies of the 42-line Bible that Gutenberg completed in Mainz between 1452 and 1455 after returning home in 1448. Live printing demonstrations are held on reconstructed Gutenberg presses. The novel never claims Jikji's technology was directly transmitted to Gutenberg — but the fact that two printing revolutions happened 78 years apart at opposite ends of Eurasia makes this the essential counterpart stop on Jikji's journey.

(Mainzer Dom, Mainz)

A cathedral more than a thousand years old, right next to the Gutenberg Museum, where Gutenberg is believed to have been baptized. Not a specific scene from the novel, but a natural stop right next door if you're visiting the Gutenberg Museum.

(Vatican Apostolic Library and Archives)

Where the novel's central mystery — an old papal letter — points to. In reality one of the world's oldest and most extensive document collections, holding many records of medieval contact between Europe and Asia, making it fertile ground for the novel's imagination. To be clear, though: the letter's recipient and interpretation in the story are entirely fictional, not a confirmed historical fact.
